Editor’s Note: A brilliant and very disturbing article for anyone in or considering working in philanthropy by Warren Buffett’s son. One of my MBA professors, Jay Barney, called ours a “growing industry” back in 2006 and Buffett updates that theory here. Philanthropy is indeed a fast growing business. While our foundation has and will continue to avoid advocacy, Buffett provides an important, if stinging reminder to those on the top of the food chain that the problems of poverty are more fundamental than we can solve just by “giving back” after we’ve made our own fortunes.
